President Bola Tinubu has tasked Edo State governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to focus on the development of his state, assuring him of the Federal Government’s support and the backing of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF).
Speaking during a meeting on Thursday in Abuja with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), President Tinubu emphasized the importance of good governance. The meeting was also attended by the Edo deputy governor-elect, Rep. Dennis Idahosa, who presented their certificates of return.
“Governor-elect, you can now face the task of development. We are here to work with you. You have seen the progressive governors of APC. They are truly progressive. Work with them. Learn the ropes, and I believe you are up to the task,” President Tinubu said.
While acknowledging the challenges inherent in democracy, especially in emerging economies like Nigeria, the President emphasized the need for strong leadership to overcome these hurdles. He also congratulated Okpebholo and Idahosa, describing their partnership as a symbol of unity in governance.
“You started as rivals and ended up as partners. You are a symbol of good understanding in politics,” Tinubu noted, while recognizing the contributions of Senator Adams Oshiomhole, former Edo State governor, the progressive governors, and APC leaders in ensuring a successful election in Edo.
The President also lauded the efforts of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies in conducting a peaceful and orderly election in Edo, noting that there were no incidents of violence.
“I must thank the security agencies. There was no bloodshed, no riot; people voted and went back to their houses in peace,” Tinubu remarked.
National Chairman of the APC, Senator Abdullahi Ganduje, echoed the President’s sentiments, praising the electorate’s commitment to voting despite the heavy rainfall on Election Day. He highlighted the party’s strong performance and expressed optimism about securing future victories in gubernatorial elections in Ondo and Anambra states.
“Our next focus is winning the elections in Ondo and Anambra, especially as part of our strategy to strengthen the party’s influence in the Southeast geopolitical zone,” Ganduje added.
The meeting ended with President Tinubu urging the party to remain united and committed to achieving the goals of the “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
