Senator Shehu Sani Addresses Colonial Legacy and Nation-Building in Nigeria
In a recent statement, Senator Shehu Sani highlighted the historical impact of British colonialism on Nigeria and compared it with the experiences of other nations formed through colonial rule.
In his remarks, shared on social media, the senator emphasized that the British forcefully united different regions to create what is now known as Nigeria. However, he noted that this was a common occurrence across Africa, with the French, Portuguese, Belgians, and Spanish colonizers similarly shaping the borders of African nations.
Sani further expanded the discussion, stating that colonial powers imposed their will not only in Africa but also in the Americas and parts of Asia. He drew comparisons between Nigeria and countries like the United States and Canada, both of which were also products of colonialism.
According to Sani, the key difference between these nations and Nigeria lies in their approach to their colonial past. While many Nigerians continue to criticize figures like Lord Lugard, who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s formation, countries like the U.S. and Canada have moved beyond such blame. Instead, these nations have embraced their diversity and worked towards building a unified future despite their own historical challenges.
