Peter Obi Calls for Sober Reflection on Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary
In a heartfelt message shared on his X account, former presidential candidate Peter Obi urged Nigerians to use the 64th Independence Day celebration as a moment for reflection on the nation’s progress and challenges.
While acknowledging the natural and human resources that Nigeria has been blessed with, Obi expressed deep concern over the country’s current state of affairs.
“For me, this should also be a day of sober reflection for every Nigerian, especially for us, the leaders, whose actions and inactions have contributed to the stagnation and glaring failures we are witnessing at present,” Obi wrote.
He questioned whether the nation has succeeded in lifting people out of poverty, addressing education needs, and building a productive economy, pointing out the over 18 million out-of-school children and Nigeria’s worst-ever debt profile.
Obi also lamented Nigeria’s ranking in global indices, noting its poor performance in security, corruption, and rule of law. Comparing Nigeria’s progress to other countries that gained independence around the same time, he described the nation as “in decline, urgently in need of rescue from further decay.”
