Addressing the audience, Obasanjo focused on the theme, “Pan-Africanism in the Political Course of Agostinho Neto.” He explained that while Pan-Africanism began as an ideology rooted in unity and solidarity, it unfortunately evolved into a political movement that neglected the continent’s economic challenges.
“Pan-Africanism is a movement and ideology,” Obasanjo said. “Unfortunately, it emphasised solidarity in our coming together, and later on, it became political. It pays more attention to political movements than economic reasons. This is where I see a cavity in the form of Pan-Africanism ideology.”
The former president urged African nations to shift their focus from political independence to economic freedom, a goal he believes has been overlooked since many countries gained their sovereignty. He also lamented Africa’s failure to properly acknowledge the contributions of its past leaders, like Agostinho Neto, who paved the way for current generations.
“One of the things that we tend to do in Africa is to forget the past and our leaders who have made numerous contributions we are enjoying,” Obasanjo said. “We should thank you most sincerely.”
Obasanjo’s remarks come at a time when many African nations continue to struggle with economic development, despite decades of political independence. His call for a renewed emphasis on economic liberation reflects a growing sentiment among African leaders and thinkers that political freedom alone is insufficient to secure the continent’s future.
The event in Lagos drew participants from across the Angolan community in Nigeria, as well as other notable guests, all gathered to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Neto and reflect on the future of Pan-Africanism.
