Noto Peninsula in Japan has been devastated by flooding due to torrential rains. The Noto Peninsula in central Japan is grappling with the aftermath of unprecedented rainfall that has triggered severe flooding and landslides, leaving at least seven people dead and many more missing.
This comes as the region struggles to recover from a devastating magnitude-7.5 earthquake that struck earlier this year.
The city of Wajima, one of the hardest-hit areas, recorded over 540 millimetres of rain in just 72 hours, the heaviest continuous downpour since records began.
This deluge overwhelmed the region’s rivers, causing them to burst their banks and inundate surrounding communities. Many homes were swept away, and roads were submerged, isolating over 100 communities across the peninsula.
Local authorities have ordered evacuations for over 110,000 people in Ishikawa Prefecture, including the cities of Wajima and Suzu. Additional evacuation orders have been issued in neighbouring Niigata and Yamagata Prefectures as a precaution against further landslides and flooding.
Meanwhile, the Hokuriku Electric Power Company reported that more than 3,700 households remain without power, further complicating rescue and relief operations.
