A tragic mass shooting outside the Hush hookah and cigar lounge in the Five Points South entertainment district left four people dead and 17 others injured late Saturday night. Birmingham police report that multiple shooters opened fire on a group of people shortly after 11 p.m.
The victims were caught in the crossfire on the street and sidewalk outside the lounge. Three people were found unresponsive with gunshot wounds at the scene and were pronounced dead, while another victim died at the hospital. Of the 17 injured, at least four have life-threatening injuries and are being treated at local hospitals, including UAB and St. Vincent’s.
Police believe the incident was not random but rather an isolated conflict involving specific targets. No suspects are currently in custody, and police have set up an evidence submission portal, urging anyone with information or surveillance footage to come forward.
Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond and Mayor Randall Woodfin expressed their condolences to the victims and their families, emphasizing the need for community cooperation to bring the perpetrators to justice. “We owe it to them to do everything we can to take these shooters off the streets,” Mayor Woodfin stated.
The use of Glock switches, illegal devices that convert handguns into automatic weapons, has been linked to the shooting, highlighting a growing concern for law enforcement. The incident marks one of the deadliest mass shootings in Birmingham this year, prompting local faith leaders and residents to call for an end to the violence that continues to plague the community.
