Governor Fubara Approves New Psychiatric Hospital in Obio-Akpor Amidst Political Tensions

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced the construction of a state-of-the-art psychiatric hospital in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, during a speech marking his first year in office.

The Governor remarked that the facility “will come in handy very soon,” a veiled comment referencing ongoing political strife in the state, particularly with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

Fubara’s announcement came during a church service to celebrate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, where he compared his achievements in office to Wike’s eight-year tenure.

The two political figures have been at odds since Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), accused Fubara of distancing himself from the political allies who helped him rise to power.

The new psychiatric hospital is part of a broader development agenda spearheaded by Fubara, which also includes the completion of major road infrastructure projects, such as the Trans-Kalabari Road and the Port Harcourt Ring Road.

The governor emphasized that his administration is focused on delivering tangible improvements for the people of Rivers State, free from personal business interests.

In response to Wike’s earlier remarks about still controlling the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers, Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to developing the state, cautioning against unnecessary political bickering.

He urged those involved to “eat your plantain and keep quiet,” as his administration continues to make progress in areas like healthcare and infrastructure.

The rivalry between Fubara and Wike has cast a shadow over Rivers politics, but Fubara’s remarks highlight his intention to focus on governance rather than get caught up in political power struggles. Whether this approach will de-escalate tensions remains to be seen.
