Dangote Group Announces Plans to Transport Refined Petroleum by Sea to Reduce Road Pressure and Boost Exports Across Africa
The Dangote Group has revealed plans to begin transporting refined petroleum products via sea routes, a move aimed at reducing pressure on Nigeria’s road networks.
The announcement was made by Fatima Wali-Abdurrahman, Senior Adviser to the Group President on Special Projects and Strategic Relations, in a statement released on Sunday.
Wali-Abdurrahman detailed the construction of a jetty within the Lekki Free Zone, designed to handle bulk cargo during the development of the Dangote Refinery.
This new seaport infrastructure will not only facilitate exports to other African nations but also allow for the transportation of finished petroleum products to other Nigerian ports along the coast for further distribution inland.
She emphasized that this initiative would “ease the pressure on roads from the refinery” while supporting the export of products across Africa.
The Dangote Group’s announcement coincided with its participation as a key sponsor of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s trade fair, where it showcased its newly operational oil refinery, which has already begun discharging petroleum products.
The company also promoted its diverse business ventures, including Dangote Fertilizer, Dangote Sugar, NASCON (Dangote Salt), and Dangote Cement.
Attendees at the trade fair showed strong interest in the Dangote Group’s expanding operations. Peter Ibrahim, one of the participants, said, “I’m here to explore job and business opportunities at the Dangote Refinery, which we know has created several opportunities.”
Cement dealer Sale Sagir echoed this interest, stating, “I came to this trade fair specifically to learn about Dangote’s petroleum products and find out how to become a distributor.”
Wali-Abdurrahman also highlighted Dangote’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint by investing in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Over the past decade, the company has converted a third of its fleet to run on CNG and is continuing its transition to greener energy.
Chief Emeka Obegolu, President of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry, praised the Dangote Group’s role in Nigeria’s industrialization, noting the company’s substantial contributions to the national economy through taxes, which help fund infrastructure projects and social programs. Represented by Vice President Legal, Aisha Abdullahi, Obegolu commended the Dangote Group for its “unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s development.”
