Speaking with Saturday Beats, the plus-sized actress revealed that she didn’t recognize the abuse until it became physical.
“I didn’t realize it was happening to me,” she said. “I’d heard other women talk about abuse, but I never thought it could happen to me. I used to think, ‘I’m a big woman, why would anyone want to hurt me?’ But abuse isn’t about your size.”
Monalisa recounted the shock she felt when her partner first hit her. “When I got that first slap, I was in shock. It came out of nowhere and over something so insignificant. I was dazed.”
The actress described the experience as painful and unexpected because she had trusted him. Despite recognizing he wasn’t on her level, Monalisa admitted she regretted lowering her standards to date him.
“Anyone can be a victim, whether you’re large or not,” she emphasized. “It’s not about your size or strength. Abuse is about control, and no one is immune.”
